When we were in the 'talking and dreaming' phase of starting our Los Angeles boutique, Treehaus, we talked about the various things that we would like our boutique to be. We wanted to be a champion for local artists, indie clothing designers, and craftspeople, we wanted to feel like an integral part of the community, and we wanted to give back to the community that we have gotten so much from. Saralynne and I met at Cheerful Helpers, an incredible organization that offers a pre-school and a BEIG program for families with children who struggle with relationships and communication. Their whole family approach has helped many families like ours. We dreamed of creating a space filled with art and great design that gave back to the community. To achieve that goal, we have openings every couple of months that feature local artists. We choose our favorite charities and give a portion of our sales for the day to them.
The Unusual Suspects is devoted to Los Angeles’ youth, and believe that there is hope for each one if given the right opportunity and support, and that’s exactly what they do. A majority of the youth involved in their programming (over 1,000 annually) live in poverty, have visions of futures shaped by violence and loss, struggle with reading and writing skills, and as a result, have low self esteem and broken relationships. Our team uses the stage as a vehicle for confidence, hope, reconciliation and belonging.
Given the breadth of talent and access to industry, Los Angeles is home to many wonderful theatre arts, after-school, and mentoring programs; They are proud to call many of them partners and friends. Los Angeles is also home to a variety of nuanced communities and neighborhoods, and the tools used to address each one’s particular needs must be as multifaceted as its people. Our team has spent over 20 years teaching, reaching, and transforming Los Angeles’ youth.
There are many ways to help The Unusual Suspects. Look into the many amazing volunteering opportunities, like becoming a Volunteer Mentor, support them financially, attend a Gala or Performance. There is proven measurable impact of providing arts education and mentorship to at-risk youth in at risk and vulnerable communities. Statistical outcomes of teen pregnancy, poverty, gang involvement and crime are greatly reduced and replaced with positive cycles and community engagement. Treehaus is proud to pair with The Unusual Suspects and hope you will consider becoming involved as well.
