When we started our unique Atwater boutique, Treehaus, one of the things we were really passionate about was finding small batch and local makers. Los Angeles is the perfect location to do this, as it is so rich with talented, creative makers. We love going to art shows, pop-ups, makers markets, flea markets, and looking on line for unique, talented makers. As we’ve grown and become recognized for showcasing local makers, artists have started bringing their work to us.
From the beginning we’ve carried a lot of jewelry by local makers. Hyun Yu, Rachael Brecher, and Erica Stout are a few of our current favorites
HyWorks’ approach to jewelry design is influenced by Hyun Yu’s background in graphic design. Her style is minimal and modern yet feminine. Her exploration of materials and forms produce pieces of wearable art designed and constructed by hand. Her attention to detail is impeccable, making her pieces museum worthy.
Erica Stout’s Funhouse Labs line is all about yummy, wearable pops of color. She makes beautiful, high end sterling silver jewelry and then powder coats the settings. Erica’s color sense is spot on, resulting in cheeky, delightful pieces. Her unique perspective is playful yet serious and grounded in solid craftsmanship with meticulous construction.
Rachel Brecher has a wicked sense of humor that is beautifully portrayed in her work. Did you ever wear paperclips for earrings as a high schooler?... well she makes them in sterling and gold. My favorite piece of hers is currently the silver matchstick necklace, with a bright red tip, on a delicate, oxidized silver chain. Her work mixes feminine and masculine, matte and shiny, delicate and bold, whimsical and sophisticated.
The love of contrast is something near and dear to our hearts. We are very drawn to pieces with contrasting elements and this theme can be found all over treehaus. It is, in fact, part of the genesis of our name. "Tree" for represents natural, organic forms, and contrasts with” haus”, which references the Bauhaus school of design. The name treehaus also evokes a sense of play and whimsy, as treehouses represent childhood, fun and not taking life too seriously. We think art and design is fun, should be accessible to everyone.
Treehaus is a great place to find locally made jewelry and other unique gifts. We wanted to offer an alternative to the mass produced goods offered by shopping malls, so we created a small, neighborhood boutique that honors talented, local and small batch makers. At treehaus you will find one-of-a-kind pieces that you will be proud to give.
One of the things we get super excited about at Treehaus is cool new art!
It is part of our mission to find and give a platform to new local artists. To that end we have a bi-monthly art opening in our Atwater Village Boutique Shop
